Exposed Aggregate Concrete Guide | IDS-DMV

The ultimate exposed aggregate concrete guide – Uncover the secrets to stunning surfaces

Exposed aggregate concrete is very similar to typical flatwork concrete, except the exposed face of concrete cream (a mixture of cement and fine aggregates pushed to the top of the exposed concrete surface at the finishing stage of pouring concrete) is washed away before concrete is cured.

An image of an exposed concrete walkway, from a low angle to show the surface texture, follows below.

This type of walkway has a greater texture and generally improved resistance to slippage for foot traffic.  Concrete batches for exposed aggregate concrete are specifically mixed with aggregates that have greater consistency and generally better aesthetic values. For example, some concrete mixes are made with crushed granite aggregate.  The concrete walkway shown above is made with a small river rock aggregate.  Crushed granite aggregate, by comparison has sharper angles and edges and therefore without further amendment post-pouring may be less desirable for this type of use.
