Where and how to install flashings and counterflashings for optimal protection
Flashings and counterflashings are metal or imperable materials usd to span from an upper surface onto a lower surface to direct the flow or movement of water or moisture away from susceptible building areas. Joints, unions, or transitions between dissimilar building materials or planar joints may be areas that are otherwise susceptible to water entry.
The picture below shows a group of samples, short sections of flashings, cut for display, to benefit selection. These examples are galvanized steel, but similar profiles are available in TPO coated aluminum and painted aluminum.
Other modern flexible low permeability materials such as EPDM, PVC, and TPO are also often used as flashing materials in masonry and concrete attached or embedded type configuration.
