Quoining in Architecture: History, Types, and Techniques

Quoining – Where craftsmanship and creativity intersect!

Stone or pronounced masonry exterior building corners are called quoining.

The image below shows an example of a brick building with stone quoining at the exterior corners.

Similar to a pigeon hole walk corner, this detail provides a a break up to the otherwise continuous uninterrupted brick facade. In this case the additional architectural and structural detail provides a more appealing and distinct aesthetic element. In the case of pigeonhole wall corners though it almost looks looks like a oversight or mistake.
