Discover Skylight Preservation in Historic Buildings

The skylight renaissance – How restoration unveils lost elegance

Very few original historic skylights remain in the historic buildings of Washington DC, but the few that do remain show interesting facets of historic construction. The historic skylights were generally vented to allow air to rise passively through the house. With a window open on the lower level of the house, the skylight, always open at a vented portion of the sides under the glazed cover, air could rise in a heat stack effect.

The following picture below shows a view of the skylight looking from inside of the top level of the building up through the skylight to the outdoors. In this picture you can see the pyramid shape of the skylight.

From the top of the roof you can see a different view of the skylight. This skylight sits atop a framed curb.
