A block and tackle can be used to significantly decrease the amount of force required to hoist or lift materials. The cabling running through the pulleys is called reeving. That cable then runs through the pulley and in cases of a double pulley type setup can run from one pulley to another to lift between the load being hoisted and a crane or fixed support point.
